Some esoteric trivia: near the end of Gravity's Rainbow Pynchon writes "Philip Marlowe will suffer a horrible migraine and reach by reflex for the pint of rye in his suit pocket, and feel homesick for the lacework balconies of the Bradbury Building." This is a reference to the 1969 James Garner movie Marlowe in which the detective's office was located in this Los Angeles landmark.
