Max's Kansas City was a music venue and bar in NYC from 1961 to 1985. It was a hangout for artists and celebrities, and a venue that supported the emerging glam rock scene. The Velvet Underground played their last shows here in the summer of 1970. The New York Dolls played here frequently, and had a direct influence on the formation of the Ramones, who also played here.
According to wikipedia, the name stems from the following: "All the steakhouses had Kansas City on the menu because the best steak was Kansas City-cut, so I thought it should be 'something Kansas City'. 'Max' was chosen because it sounded "restauranty."

On March 18, 2002, the Ramones were inducted into the Rock and Roll of Fame. The ceremony was held at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York, and a newly-mohawked Eddie Vedder (with leather jacket and Ramones t-shirt) introduced Johnny, Dee Dee, Tommy, and Marky. Joey had died the year earlier.

When Joey Ramone was eighteen, he checked himself into St. Vincent's Hospital. The diagnosis was obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and he felt there were voices that made him repeat things. As Mark Leigh (Joey's brother) put it: "The doctors said...it would render him useless to function in society for the rest of his life."

This dive bar used to feature live music. On December 11, 2000, it was also the last place that Joey Ramone performed, when he hosted an annual Christmas show that showcased bands he was supporting: the Independents, the Misfits, and his sibling's (Mickey Leigh) band, the Rattlers.

On November 30, 2003, this corner was officially renamed "Joey Ramone Place" by the city of New York. It is the block where Joey once lived with bandmate Dee Dee Ramone, and near the former site of CBGB.
Interestingly, the Joey Ramone Place sign is the most stolen sign in New York City. Most street signs are placed between 12 to 14 feet, but this one is now hung at 20 feet to deter theft.
